Overview
WeSupply allows merchants to issue refunds directly to a Shopify gift card. This provides a seamless experience for customers while keeping store credit within your shop. However, some Shopify users may initially believe the gift card is not generated because the codes are not visible by default.
This article explains how the process works and what to do if you don’t immediately see the generated gift cards in Shopify.
Pre-requisites
Before issuing refunds to gift cards, make sure you have:
- A Shopify store connected to WeSupply.
- Refund processor correctly configured in WeSupply.
- Admin access to Shopify (required to view gift card codes).
Step-by-Step Instructions
Step 1 – Issue Refund to Gift Card in WeSupply
- From the WeSupply Admin Dashboard, open the order you’d like to refund.
- Select Refund and choose Gift Card as the refund method.
- Confirm and issue the refund.
At this point, the refund is processed, and a Shopify gift card is automatically created for the customer.
Step 2 – Locate Gift Cards in Shopify
- Log in to your Shopify Admin.
- Go to Products → Gift Cards.
- Here you will find the generated gift card record.
⚠️ Important: If this is your first time using gift cards, Shopify will not display the codes until you create at least one gift card manually as an admin. After that, all generated gift cards (including those created by refunds) will appear.

- Always double-check the Refund Processor Setup in WeSupply before issuing refunds.
- If customers cannot find their gift card code, confirm in Shopify Admin under Gift Cards.
- For transparency, let customers know that refunds to gift cards are processed instantly.

Q: I refunded to a gift card, but nothing shows up in Shopify. What happened?
A: The refund worked, but Shopify hides gift card codes unless at least one has been manually created by an admin. Create a gift card manually in Shopify to unlock access.
Q: Do I need to configure anything special for gift card refunds?
A: No, as long as your refund processor is correctly set up, the process is automatic.
Q: Will customers automatically receive their gift card code?
A: Yes — once generated, Shopify automatically emails the gift card code to the customer.
