Introduction
You can now create return rules in WeSupply based on Shopify Variant Metafields. In plain English, this means you can set special return rules for specific product variants — perfect if you want to treat certain items differently, like final sale or limited edition products.
Why This Feature is a Game-Changer
Not every product should have the same return policy. Maybe you’re okay with customers returning regular stock, but not clearance items, or maybe you want to limit returns for products with special packaging. By using variant metafields, you can automate these rules so customers see the right return options right away — saving your team time, avoiding awkward manual reviews, and keeping things crystal clear for shoppers.
How to Set It Up
Step 1: Add Variant Metafields in Shopify
- Go to your Shopify admin.
- Head to Settings → Metafields and metaobjects → Variants.
- Click Add definition and create your metafield (e.g., “return_eligibility”).
- Choose the content type (text, number, etc.) and save.
- Open the product variant you want to tag and fill in the metafield value (like “yes” or “no”).
Step 2: Create the Return Condition in WeSupply
- In WeSupply, go to Settings → Return and Warranty Methods → Return Logics and Policies.
- Either edit an existing return logic or click Create New.
- In the Conditions section, choose Product Metafield from the dropdown.
- Pick your metafield key (the one you set in Shopify).
- Choose your condition type:
- Equals – Must exactly match the value you set.
- Does not equal – Excludes a specific value.
- Contains – Matches any value containing the text.
- Does not contain – Excludes any value containing the text.
- Enter the value exactly as it appears in Shopify.
- Hit Save — and you’re done!
From now on, WeSupply will automatically check that metafield before allowing a return, making sure only the products you approve are eligible.
Recommended Best Practices:
WeSupply automatically syncs variant metafields from Shopify. If a variant metafield is updated or removed in Shopify, that change will automatically carry over to WeSupply with the next order update.
To make sure your metafield-based return rules work exactly as intended:
Set your metafield values before the order is placed
Keep those values the same for the entire return window
If a metafield value is modified or removed while the return window is still active, the updated value will be synced from Shopify and may affect the product’s return eligibility.
